  1. DEFEND B-17S AGAINST ME 163s

  3. The first contact with Luftwaffe rocket
  4. fighters occured on July 28, 1944, when 
  5. five Me 163 Komets were encountered 
  6. while they were up on trial flights.  
  7. One week later, three 352nd Group P-51s 
  8. escorting B-17s to Magdeburg were 
  9. bounced by several Me 163s.  The Komets 
  10. dove from approximately 7,000 feet above 
  11. the Mustangs and pressed their attack to 
  12. nearly point-blank range.  The Me 163s 
  13. then zoomed up out of sight into the 
  14. clear blue sky.

  18. Since the first sightings of German 
  19. rocket aircraft one week ago, you've
  20. been briefed to be on the alert for
  21. them.  You and two other P-51Ds are to
  22. escort B-17s as they bomb an aircraft
  23. engine factory at Magdeburg.  Remember
  24. that your primary responsibilty is to
  25. protect the bombers.  If you are
  26. attacked, do not stray too far from
  27. your "big friends".
